Fatigue strength assessment of TIG-dressed high-strength steel cruciform joints by nominal and local approaches

Abstract According to the IIW recommendation, fatigue strength of welded steel joints is defined as independent base material in case as-welded condition. However, post-treatment techniques can improve performance structures, especially for increased strengths. Therefore, this paper investigates effect TIG dressing, common post-weld treatment method, on high-strength S700 cruciform joints. The statistically evaluated test results reveal a significant increase nominal from FAT 90 up 182 MPa TIG-dressed state. experiments are further compared recommended and suggested design curves applying both well local stress approaches. Focusing state, stresses validated leading conservative assessment. In addition, proposed slope finite life region with value m 1 = 4 shows sound fit 4.7 results. estimation performed based recent proposal using theory critical distances. linear elastic numerical analysis investigated specimens performed. Again, resulting S-N agree validating approach.
